Site Description The house had medieval origins with a Georgian facade, the entrance was to the east of the property with an extended drive off the main frontage to the rear of the property. The New drive therefore had to allow this access plus create a courtyard feel in keeping with a rural Georgian back drop. The open area at the front of the house was not to be blocked but enhanced and not totally screened from the house, but privacy was required from the road.
Design Brief To create a new drive with the feeling of a more enclosed courtyard, to provide privacy yet maintain the views through to the rest of the garden area at the front. To continue to allow access to the back drive and to make the most of the Georgian facade yet keep the design as simple as possible and in keeping with a rural setting and be resistant to the cold winds which prevailed.
Materials used were Bradstone ‘Old Town’ paving and granite setts, principle plants were Buxus sempervirens (Box) and Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) and Taxus baccata (Yew) to provide the structural elements of the planting.
